Selling company data in UK administration or liquidation

Updated October 2026

When a UK company enters administration or liquidation, its digital records can be an overlooked asset. AI companies now pay for real business archives, which can mean an additional realisation for creditors.

Who can sign

The administrator or liquidator controls the company's assets and decides whether its records can be licensed. Runeshares works directly with insolvency practitioners and their advisers.

Records that qualify

Slack or Teams history, email, CRM, ticketing and project tools, shared drives, source code and accounting records, typically from companies that had 25 or more employees and three or more years of history.

Preserve before you decide

Cloud subscriptions often lapse quickly after an appointment, and some providers delete data soon after. Exporting early keeps the option open without committing the estate to anything.

UK GDPR and confidentiality

Personal data is removed or anonymised before any transfer. HR, health, private messages, client-owned and privileged material are excluded. Scope, method and verification are agreed in writing first. Practitioners should take their own advice on their specific appointment.

FAQ

Does this cost the estate anything?

No. The assessment is free and there is no obligation.

How quickly can we get a figure?

An initial indication can usually be given once we know the systems, headcount and years of records. No data is needed for that step.

Can this be part of a wider asset sale?

Yes. Data licensing can sit alongside other realisations, as long as rights are clear.
