Shutting down? Export your data before it is deleted
Updated October 2026
When a company closes, the subscriptions stop and the records start disappearing. Those records may be worth a significant amount to AI companies. A few hours of exporting can preserve that value.
Why it is urgent
Cloud tools do not keep data forever once payments stop. Slack, for example, may delete messages and files older than one year from workspaces on its free plan, and deleted data cannot be restored.
Export checklist
- Slack or Teams: run a full workspace export from the admin settings while you still have admin access
- Email: export mailboxes from Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 using the admin tools
- Jira, Linear, Confluence: create a full backup including attachments
- GitHub or GitLab: keep the repositories, or clone them with full history
- Google Drive or SharePoint: export shared drives
- CRM: export contacts, deals and activity history from HubSpot or Salesforce
- Accounting: export ledgers and reports from your accounting system
Store it safely
Keep exports in one secure location with restricted access. They contain personal data, so treat them carefully until a decision is made.
Before anyone sees it
Nothing needs to be shared to get a valuation. If you go ahead, personal details are removed or anonymised before any transfer.
FAQ
Who should do the export?
Whoever still has admin access, ideally before accounts are downgraded or closed. In a bankruptcy, coordinate with the trustee or liquidator.
We already cancelled our subscriptions. Is it too late?
Not always. Some data may still be recoverable. Check each tool as soon as possible.
Do we need to decide on a sale first?
No. Exporting simply keeps the option open.
